I am running XP and want a firewall. A long time ago I tried Zone
Alarm but it used too many system resiurces and it was very messy to uninstall properly. Then I tried Sygate Pro. That seemed very nice but I got a lot of trouble with not being able to connect to the net after booting up. Now I want to try another firewall. I have come across Tiny Personal Firewall. I installed the free version 2.0.14. I this the latest free version? Is theer anything important in the chargeable version 5.0 of TPF which the free version does not have? Piotr Makley |

TPF Used to be just a Tiny Personal Firewall, but now it's suddenly an entire security suite which enables you to manage lots of other stuff like which processes can start other process an' all. That firewall has been known as Kerio Personal Firewall for over 2 years now. The latest version is 2.1.5 and can be gotten here: http://kerio.com/dwn/kpf/kerio-pf-2.1.5-en-win.exe It's the same firewall but improved over the version you have. I also think it's the best free firewall there is. donutbandit |

Very nice interface design, very smooth installation process, and very easy to use. Ford Prefect |

Tiny Personal Firewall still exists (http://www.tinysoftware.com/) and is freeware only for personal use. Kerio Personal Firewall also exists (http://www.kerio.com/) and is the freebie version (WinRoute is their big product). I also tried using the freebie ZoneAlarm on a friend's Windows 2000 Pro system but way too many times it would popup a warning about a connection, require the user to allow the connection, never tell the user what application was making the connection, and my friend (who is not that savvy) had to keep opening the web-like interface to ZoneAlarm to see what then got "?" for status regarding connections. It was not an easy firewall to use, and even I wouldn't like it popping up to notify of a connection attempt without telling me who was trying to make the connection. When I tried configuring it, checking logs, and other setup, there was just too much that it didn't have so I uninstall it from his host. I don't know about TPF and Kerio but those look like candidates. -- __________________________________________________ __________ *** Post replies to newsgroup. Is the free version 2.1.5 of Tiny/Kerio any less secure than the paid version 5.0 of Tiny? http://www.tinysoftware.com/ Is the difference mainly due to additional features? If so then are any of these additional features really worth having? Piotr Makley |

If so then is Kerio version 4 and less secure than Tiny 2.1.5? Piotr Makley |

The original Tiny Personal Firewall (the one the OP was talking about, version 2.0.4) became Kerio Personal Firewall over 2 years ago when the programmers who developed it and Tiny Software decided to part ways. The programmers took the program, renamed it Kerio Personal Firewall, and continued development. It reached version 2.1.5, which is mature. They then set out to produce Kerio Personal Firewall, version 4, which I do NOT recommend. I've read little about it but bug reports. They tried to dumb down the firewall for Zone Alarm users, and lost much of the excellent configurabiltiy that made Tiny/Kerio so desirable. Tiny Software, in the meantime, developed a new Tiny Personal Firewall, version 3, which is COMPLETELY different, and is NOT free, not even for personal use. It's expireware with a 30 day limit. The recommended firewall is Kerio 2.1.5, which is the same firewall as the OP was asking about (TPF 2.0.4) but greatly improved. Hope this clears up the misunderstanding. donutbandit |

I think you should also seriously consider Outpost Pro. I have been trying different FW's for the past few months as a supplement to a hardware firewall (I want something that would prevent any Trojans that I may get to dial out- although with Symantec Corporate, a stand alone Trojan scanner and common sense I don't think that this is likely- and to prevent java scripts and activeX controls to be downloaded and run on my computer). I've found that the new version of Kerio (4.0.13) is very good but Outpost has the best record against most of the firewall tests that are available. They both take up an equal amount of resources (about 15,000). As to Tiny- it is a pain to set up. The former 2 already have very good pre-configured rules so personally I don't see any point in using it. harry wong |
