Default modem as firewall?

I know that some switch/routers act as a firewall, to some extent. Do some
DSL hi-speed modems also do this?

Nope. Although you do get combined modem/routers (which might be the source
of the confusion)

RB,

Some cable and ADSL modems contain NAT router and DHCP server
components integrated. They have a single LAN connection, so you
would then need a switch, to connect multiple computers, to get the
full benefit.

Why are you concerned about firewalls when your AVG is 4 updates old????
352 (yours is 34 was issued on 8 Jan.

If you're that keen on security, get what you have working properly
first.

Geeee----thanks for your concern. You're too good to me.

I have and use alternative a/vs. The modem firewall question was for a
friend. I have a switch/router, so know it gives some protection from
incoming. I also use Black Ice for the rest. Capice?

Now I offered a friendly word to get what you or the friend have up to
date. You email sig says what you have and where you or the friend is.
Switches do nothing, routers can if set correctly. Where did you post
'It refers to a friend and posting from there'. One or others AVG is 4
out of step - but you didn't notice.

I'd have more faith in you if you could spell capicce.
