I bought a ZX SPECTUM about twenty years ago,--lots of fun--loads of late
nights--play games--learn some BASIC programming--dabble with MACHINE CODE --exellent Played about with computers through the years--great playing with PHOTOSHOP--spreadsheets in EXEL and loads of other stuff Bought a WINDOWS XP machine a year or so ago --lots of fun for a while --use some of the stuff I've learned years ago --for fun -- help other people --do a few work related things--BLISS ah ah---I realise that this machine is part mine, but there are b*******s out there who want to interfere with all of this So how do I slow them down? I've got an Antivirus, a Firewall , but from what I can tell that's like shutting all the windows and leaving the door wide open (P.S. I know the door can't actually be locked) Anyway; the reason I'm posting to this group is that I would like some help with sorting out the basics So; just before writing this I fired up the Computer and went into Task Manager and it told me there were 32 Processes running There were 6 instances of SVHOST.EXE Also E-SIOTC2.EXE------SOINTGR.EXE---waudt.exe--LSASS.EXE--OSA.EXE--etc. etc. Is there a database anywhere that would tell me what all these things are (similarily for programs) The FIREWALL really needs a lot of information and at the moment I havn't got a clue how to help it cheers bj bj |

Hi BJ
> So how do I slow them down? The main key to safe computing, and "internetting", nowadays, is the propper user behaviour, Firewall's and Antivirus software comes 2nd, as an extra security, capable of "bailing" you out, in the case of an emergency. Why not give, Lavasoft Ad-aware, a shot, it is made for, and are very good at, removing Add & Spyware kinds of software. I guess your firewall is something like the "ZoneAlarm", or "Norton's Firewall", and yes, this kind of "protection" require some user configuration, most important, you have to know what you are doing, when allowing a program to access the internet, - and in this case, an old grammar rule, by my english teacher, comes in to be handy, "If in doubt, leave it without", back then, it was about the english way of using comma's. If you have ever opend a Danish novel or magazine, you sure know what i mean. It's just like, "Better safe than sorry". About the processes you are mentioning, OSA.exe is, or at least should be, a part of the Microsoft Office package. I hope you mean SVCHost.exe, this is a part of the Windows service system, and is usually running in at least a few instances, LSASS.exe should be okay two, I don't know the last 3, E-SIOTC2.EXE, SOINTGR.EXE, and waudt.exe, could be a part of something usefull. I guess you just need to study a bit, and in a few weeks, then you master the Firewall two, just like you did with that ole ZX. Regards Per Pedersen PS: Please bare with bad grammar and typos.
