"In an unfortunate twist, the BD-P1000 apparently - though not
verbally confirmed by Samsung - is not capable of playing 50GB dual
layer discs. Page 8 of the instruction manual contains a chart that
states only single layer discs will play. Further down on the same page
is a compatibility disclaimer noting the format is evolving and all
disc types will not work. While no specific mention is made of a future
firmware update to support 50GB dual layer discs, mention is made of
updating the BD-ROM version via firmware. Samsung would have to be
foolish not to offer a firmware update to support 50GB, if it's even
possible through a simple firmware update. That's a question best
suited for the technophiles."

So, early adopters will be stuck with the 25 GB discs, smaller in
capacity than HD-DVD and stuck with an inferior video codec to boot!
Nice!

Use your effing brain. It only states that as of right now, only single layer
disks are supported because the standard for dual layer is still in flux.
Legally they could get in hot water if they claimed to support dual layer now or
was claiming future support and then truly didn't or couldn't deliver. Look at
the DVD+R fiasco! It is better to claim single layer support only and then
spring a dual layer firmware update when its finalized and ready.

Many of us consider mpeg4 a inferior, hacker compression scheme ala divx.

The date on the press release is 06, Jan, 2006, 6 months old. The
instruction manual that says dual layer doesn't work is in peoples
hands right now. Looks like a lot can change in 6 months.

apparently there is some confusion wrt this. Apparently the Samsung
won't play dual sided but will play dual layer.
