I got a question, and if I don't get the proper anser, then it's a gripe.
Anyway, I was just scrolling through my RSS feeds, and there's one that got me thinking: "MySpace gains top ranking of US Web sites". Now, it's not that MySpace is popular - that's not what concerns me. What concerns me is how they got this ranking. Does that mean that they counted a hit (or visit, depending on how they're counting) for everyone that visited the myspace.com domain? Or only people that stayed for more than 10 seconds or so? Because, what I can't figure out is how msn.com isn't the most popular website year after year. Every copy of IE ships with msn.com (or a redirector to it) as the default home page. That means every time someone with IE fires up their browser, msn.com gets hit. Sure, it might not be a unique visitor, but that's my thinking anyway. And yeah, people change their home page all the time. But it's been my experience that most people eithe rdon't know how or are too lazy to do it (I myself can admit to still having msn as my home page on my work machine [where there are no GPOs preventing this] and on one machine at home). So, anyone got an answer for me? Or is MySpace (and every other "most popular" website ever listed really that much more popular than MSN? -- KB MCNGP #26 Please to be click www.mcngp.com. Rgs! Probly has more to do with the fact that a lot of folks have canned IE and are useing Firefox some other browser, so they don't have the msn home page. Look at the sekrit site's stats. less than 20% of the hits identify as IE, as oppsed to nearly 25% Nutscrape and it's clones. IE has lost hugely in share in recent years. By the way, if you look at the OS stats, 76% identify as "unknown" WTF is that? -- JaR MCNGP 22 Here there be dragons Remove hat to reply |

I've been using Firefox for about six months, and I think it's generally great. BUT, after about four hours of use on my laptop it appears to be using about 160mb!!! If I close a few tabs, the memory usage doesn't go down. Sigh. |

That's all well and good, but IE still has the majority of the market share, and I've never seen msn.com on ANY "most popular" list, even 5 years ago before Firefox/Mozilla became really popular. That wasn't the answer I was looking for, so my question has been upgraded to "gripe." Thanks, JaR. -- KB MCNGP #26 www.mcngp.com nailed the Olsen twins before they were famous. |

msn.com is not the default home page on all new computers. Buy a Dell or a
Gateway, fer'instance, and you'll see for yourself. And a lot of folks have canned IE? Have you any idea what 85% market share means? OK, it's big. 17 out of 20. 340 million out of 400 million. Sure, Firefox has done good. I'm using it (like many geeks), but keep IE close by. It's not smart research to look at what geeks use, though. Oh, and my 88-year-old mother-in-law decided to change her home page to sensis.com.au. Them users are pretty stupid, but sometimes they can surprise you. 1 "JaR" <> wrote in message news > On Tue, 11 Jul 2006 14:37:08 -0400, Briscobar cast into the ether: > >> So, anyone got an answer for me? And as far as MySpace goes, you gotta figger on the millions of teenieboppers hitting it 400000000000 times a day to see if they have any new friends. *Replaces hat* -- Mitch "yer such a Jameshole" S. They done a story about myspace on the daily show a few weeks back, the had a
behaviour expert on who nearly blew a fuse when the guy proclaimed that he had 9200 odd friends and was able to keep in daily contact with them all using the "send to all" button!! v v funny. Those damn teenagers, in my day all I had was tetris and a rubix cube |
