Stop ThunderBird From Opening Next Message

It seems like it should be an obvious option, but I can't figure out
how to get TB to stop opening the next message (read or unread) after
deleting the current message.

- Open an email message in its own window
- Select delete ('X') from the toolbar
- The next message in the folder is opened in its own window

I am amazed that this is the default behavior.
