Default ModelSim, controlling waveform display

I am running a simulation using modelsim 6.0. The simulation is often
stopped as the result of a "when" command to run a script that
interacts with the simulation environment. I don't have the option of
eliminating the stop. I want to avoid the waveform window update that
occurs at each stop, since it really slows down the simulation. I don't
want the waveform window to get updated until the end of the
simulation.

Any ideas?
