I wholeheartedly believe that a system should be in place to heavily fine the hapless dumbasses that pass along viruses after having their machine infected due to their own negligence. Most reasonable people would not appreciate it at all. The government isn't known for making things better. Just more difficult and expensive. The free market is already taking care of the problem. A lot of ISP's have been closing ports and blocking traffic that never served any purpose on the net anyway (NetBIOS, and such). Some ISP's are also pushing cable modems with built in NAT devices. It will never stop all of the problems, but widescale denial of service attacks can be reduced to a brief nuisance. Keep in mind that any thoughts of the government helping out come at a price. Some would go as far as to suggest that the government's sole reason for even offering to help would be to place themselves in a supervisory position. Politicians are much more interested in what all of these free people are doing with their time. --- SELFISH, adj. Devoid of consideration for the selfishness of others. - Ambrose Bierce CyberDroog |

Why not make it illegal to ship or offer for download an operating system
unless all inbound and outbound ports are closed by default? The OS needs to be explicitly told which programs can access the internet. This could be done during the system install for web browsers and email clients. But, all other programs would need to be turned on after the install. The average use does not know as much about security as the average OS vendor/packager. Responsibility for out the box security belongs to the OS provider. They cannot be allowed to hide behind assertions of limited liability -- especially when they ask for compensation. Fred_McGriff |

No, stupidity usually resorts to obscenities to win arguments. Stupidity also does not cause computer viruses, only their propagation, like the flu, or the Black Plague. -- Dave "Crash" Dummy - A weapon of mass destruction http://lists.gpick.com \Crash\ Dummy |

Isn't influenza communicable before it becomes symptomatic? I wonder how communicable it is once symptoms become manifest ~ is there a doctor in the house? FromTheRafters |
