Is there any way that a person could find out your real name from your
email address? I'd rather open a new email box on my ISP account than use a hotmail type of account for usenet purposes. noah noah sark |

As long as your real name isn't posted anywhere on the web together with that email address then Extended is correct. BUT - if somewhere, sometime (even years ago) your real name and current email address show up on a page, then yes, someone can find out who you are in a couple of minutes at google. Also note that there are more than one of those email lookup search engines - you might be in there too. HINT: the very second that you posted this using your real email and name, it got archived in Google. So yes, in about 12 hours give or take anyone can find out who you are just for newsgroups since it is now a goner anyway. |

I was going to use the name Noah Body (from Spider Man) but decided to use Noah Sark instead. Noah Sark = Noah's ark. Thanks for the info. noah |

Of course they have something to hide... but it's not necessarily because of what you think. Their personal information. Their name is the first thing targeted by cyber stalkers. It's NEVER a good idea for the average user to post their legitimate name to the Internet. In fact, there's no reason TO post your real name to the Internet, unless you're looking for recognition. Names are meaningless in usenet, content is what matters. I don't care if you go by Waldo the Amazing Clown, if your content makes sense and has usability, I'll read it. If a person is serious about protecting their information, they'll choose to use a service such as www.cotse.net, a full-blown privacy shield. -- Colonel Flagg http://www.internetwarzone.org/ Privacy at a click: http://www.cotse.net Q: How many Bill Gates does it take to change a lightbulb? A: None, he just defines Darkness? as the new industry standard..." "...I see stupid people." |

Its a matter of opinion and personal taste. In some newsgroups and circumstances its a good idea to hide your name, in others its not. As I live in a small place, its more likely the neigbours who come round to deliver death threats personally, than a cyberstalker from CA. 2002 passed by without any particular threats, which is a record. On the whole, some of the names used in this group make me puke (yours is OK - I recently discovered the origin) However I do keep my address and telephone numbers off the net and everywhere else. -- Jim Watt http://www.gibnet.com |
