IR Sensor inoperable

I have a Sony home theater system. The model number is HCD-BC150. The
IR sensor has never worked. I'd lost the reciept so I couldn't take it
in for warranty work. I have no experience in this type of electronic
repair. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'd just like to know
if it would be worth it to take it somewhere and have it looked at, or
if there is a more simple option. I have used the remote it came with
on other players, so it is definitely a problem with the reciever.
