Wireless Networking - MN-720 and WPA

Default MN-720 and WPA

once upon a time I purchased a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-720 -
802.11g (driver 3.60.7.0)
I am just now implementing WPA on my home network. I have my router
configured, another Windows PC, a Mac and a wireless camera all using WPA-PSK.

My problem is on my one laptop using a MN-720 card, I seem to be missing
some configuration options.

When I go to Network Connections and right-click my Wireless Network
Connection - the only tabs I have at the top of this dialog window are
General and Advanced. There is no Wireless tab.

Also, when I click the Configure button for my wireless card and go to
Advanced - 10 different options show up (such as Channel, SSID, Network
Type, etc) but there is NO option to enable Security or WPA (or WEP) and no
place to put my passphrase.

I don't understand why these things are missing.
At one time someone suggested making sure Windows Zero Config was running.
And yes it is. I've even stopped and started it again.

Any ideas what happened to all my options and how I can get them back?

My guess based on a quick Google is that your MN-720 doesn't support
WPA. Replace it with a newer, better wireless adapter that does. All
devices must support WPA if you want to use WPA encryption on your
network.

don't use the software utility from microsoft to manage this card if
you are on XP. uninstall it and click the check box to let windows
manage your wireless. also check to see if the wireless zer
configuration service is started. the latest drivers in the pack from
MS support WPA, but you may have to proactively specify one of the inf
files. it's been a long time since I actually used this card.

Barb,
I uninstalled the Microsoft Broadband Utility and restarted. That's the only
thing I could find. Let me know if there's something else I should uninstall.

As far as checking the 'let windows manage your wireless' checkbox.... I
can't find it. I've looked all over and don't see it. I know it should be
there because I just setup a different PC last night and saw this checkbox -
at the top of one of the tabs I believe.

I still don't have a Wireless tab. Or the ability to set Security options.

I've thought about just pitching this card - since it's not really supported
anymore and getting a new one. Of course the one I want is $80.

But my fear is that I'll get a new card and have the SAME problem - not
seeing the options to configure security.

Something else that kinda sucks, my router is MS too. A MN-700 I think is
the model. So far so good, but still...

are you using Windows XP? Please confirm?

You need a firmware update for the MN700 to use WPA. the last firmware
for this router is 02.01.02.0590 and it supports WPA.

yes, XP SP2

my MN-700 router is working fine - I enabled WPA last night.

it's the 720 card that's the problem
