Firewall slows print jobs to wireless printer

Hi - I connected a HP3210 printer with built in Cat 45 Ethernet connection to
a NetGear Router. I have a NetGear wireless card in my Laptop to connect to
the router wirelessly and can print fine until I turn on the XP Firewall. It
then takes 5 minutes or more to print the word "test" from Notepad. HP can't
help because they said it's a router problem, and NetGear says they can't
help because I am sending print jobs, albeit verrry slowly. Can anyone help
me? Thanks.

Hi

Put the printer on a Static IP (look at he printer manual for info) and make
sure that the network utility that mange the Network printing is in the
Firewall exception.

Hi Jack - The printer thinks it is a 802.3 wired connection since it is
connected to the router and not a 802.11 connection.
The printer IP address is currently automatically set as 192.168.1.4, my pc
is 1.3 and my router is the default gateway 1.1. The printer setup menu says
changing this IP number will remove this device from the network - what
setting should I use? Also, I don't know under the Firewall options what
utility is managing the router or printing. There is a UPnP Framework under
exceptions that isn't checked. Do I need to check File and Printer Sharing?
Under Advanced there is a 1394 Connection and a Wireless Network Connection 3
(I think this is when I was using WiFi Internet) and I enabled Allowing
incoming echo request under ICMP after reading those articles. Thanks.--

Hi

Since IPs that are assigned dynamically can be changed by the Router, it is
better to assign a static IP to printer so it would be always available ay
the same address. If your Router is set to DHCP 192.168.1.1 to 10 (as and
example) assign the printer 192.168.1.20 and it would stay on the same
network.

If you want to use Win XP Firewall you have to make sure that the printer
traffic (Sharing Printers and Files) is allowed through the Firewall.

Otherwise, you might consider leaving the Firewall off since your system is
protected by the Router's Firewall and add Antivirus and AntiSpyware
software for additional protection (http://www.ezlan.net/security.html ).

Hi - I'm learning more about this stuff than I ever wanted to know, ha ha. I
enabled File and Printer sharing and I got a message that Windows is blocking
Spooler Subsystem App and asked if I wanted to enable and I said yes. When I
go to the Firewall, Exceptions, File and Printer Sharing and Edit, I see it
has opened ports 139, 445, 137 and 138. Do I need all these ports open?
Does that make me vulnerable? Can I just turn off spooling instead of having
the Spooler Subsystem App as an exception? Thanks.
