Default wireless can access all .com.au but no overseas sites!

Hi,

I am in Australia. I run vanilla XP and Internet Explorer 6. I set up a
wireless network that works OK but via wireless I cannot see any
overseas websites (Explorer times out waiting), but I can get all
Australian (.com.au) sites OK. Via wired I can see all OK.

Any suggestions apart from move to USA?

Thanks
Mark

Sounds like a DNS (Domain Name Server) problem. Servers are
a hierarchy, "Can you resolve name to dotted quad?" local DNS
server says "No - but try (the one higher up that it is peered off)".
That in turn may refer the query further up the chain. Eventually
after 5 or 6 steps it finds a server that can resolve the national
top level domains to that nations DNS server. That can resolve
the sub-domains and eventually the name gets resolved to a
dotted quad.
If you can find a dotted quad IP address outside Australia,
try the dotted quad address and see if that works.
The other approach is
Start -> Run -> ipconfig -all > C:\ipconfig.txt
on the wired and wireless machines.
Then compare the settings for each machine,
by looking at ipconfig.txt,
particularly the gateway and DNS server addresses.
If they differ, configure the non-connecting machine with
static addresses.
Note some companies restrict what users can connect to
to stop them wasting time surfing the net, which lowers
productivity, they do this by blocking access to the DNS
hierarchy for 1 or more protocols. Just like the kiddy
protect software.
There are other trouble shooting tools but try
ipconfig -all first

Move to a decent ISP?

You have possibly either a problem at your ISP or have accidentally set up a
filter to disallow anything not ending in .com.au.
