I have a wireless network running approx 45-50 notebooks and 15-20 desktops.
W ecurrently have a b network but I would like to upgrade to a g for functionality and speed. Can I begin to change the b access points to g in a staged process (Money) with backwardness as required (some older notebooks only have a b card and not b/g) or will they need to upgrade to a g? or will the network at that point revert to b? Hope this is not confusing? Cheers Jamie Crilly SysAdmin Waihi School =?Utf-8?B?SmFtaWUgQ3JpbGx5?= |

So, if some are b and some are g, they are addressed in that manner by the router. I have 4 NICs for 4 different computers and 2 were originally B only while the other 2 did up to g. They all networked wirelessly just fine and all got to internet just fine. Diamontina Cocktail |

But I think all g cards will work on a b network, so you shouldn't have any problems with every thing working, your network just may stay at b until all cards are upgraded. Good luck, jimbo jimbo |

mixed b/g mode will slow things down slightly. there's a kind of "stop
and wait" protocol because B is unaware of the newer g. how much of a slowdown depends on what you are doing. it may not impact users at all. one of my older Expert Zone columns has all the details of this.
