Not sure or care where you are from but the Internet is a World Wide Web. It is not a 'English' only place, in fact there are more Mandarin speakers using it than English speakers. I guess I'm lucky I live in a multicultural country and speak more than one language, unfortunately German is not one of them. But I think our German friend is looking for a password to unpack a file he has downloaded. Netmask |

No, the World Wide Web sits on top of the internet. It's not the Internet. > It > is not a 'English' only place, in fact there are more Mandarin speakers > using it than English speakers. I guess I'm lucky I live in a multicultural Hmmm, where do you get this interesting statistic from? I'd wager it's wrong. According to Internet World Stats, the number of English users is 312 million compared to 132 million Chinese. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats7.htm Global Reach seems to validate these numbers http://www.glreach.com/globstats/index.php3 As does the Sydney Morning Herald Language diversity to continue net's rise as No. 1 communication medium "This is fair enough. Chinese language speakers represent the second largest group of internet users - 13 per cent. The proportion of English speakers is below one-third - just 30.6 per cent of internet users speak English as their first language." http://www.smh.com.au/news/perspecti...521238556.html Of course, alt.video.dvd is an English newsgroup. > country and speak more than one language, unfortunately German is not one of > them. I have no problem with any other languages, but I do expect to see English

To say the group is an English group is nonsense. English is currently the World Franc lingua for business and many other transactions so it certainly does help at the present time to post in English if possible but it is not going to remain that way. In less than 50 years time China will be the dominate financial and technological power and there will be a change of the pattern of posts and web sites. I post in English in a couple of German Forum sites and generally get useful help from multi lingual German speakers - I certainly don't get insulted because I can't post in German. The Internet is "The World Wide Web" it allows people of all races and cultures to get to know each other and hopefully help each other. To react like a parochial insular village bumpkins only draws attention to ones own inadequacies and uncharitable attitudes. It doesn't make too much intelligence to decipher what the German speaking post was asking. Netmask |

Whether China is the dominant power won't change the language. Many Chinese speak English, India is rapidly catching China and is the largest English speaking country in the world. Communication in English will continue for many many years to come. Justin |
