Getting Firefox to open links from other programs?

For example, I sometimes use the chat program mirc, and if I click on a link
that someone's posted, it opens in IE.

Or if I want to check for updates on my CCleaner program, it too opens in
IE.

I have the "Check to see that Firefox is the default browser" box checked.
What else can I do?

close FF. Now open IE, and under Tools, Internet Options, Programs,
down at the bottom put a check to make IE the default. Now close, IE,
and reopen FF, and it should ask if you want to make it the default.
