Most of the time it is expected that people making exceptions to their
firewalls have an understanding of IT. Sometimes this is not the case,
particularly in the case of home users.

I would suggest reading these two guides first:

US-CERT Cyber Security Tip ST04-004 -- Understanding Firewalls
http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST04-004.html

Understanding Firewalls
http://www.pcsupportadvisor.com/nasample/s0499.pdf

If the Box is Checked it means it is allowing access to
and from your computer.

Be very careful which ones you check and uncheck, if you
uncheck a program that needs web access or access on an
intranet, LAN, WAN etc.. the program may not work and
could slow or stop your system in it's tracks. All that
depends on memory page file size processor speed etc
etc..

Best Wishes,

J

Do you mean possibly Server Side Cleanup like an RPC
(Remote Procedure Call)?
