explorer.exe stops responding

when i try to shut down windows xp, an error message says explorer.exe has stopped responding and needs to close. If you click end now after it has finished shuting down explorer it then just comes up with the desktop background, and hangs the system entirely. I can't find a solution anywhere on microsoft.com.
