When I read Your first message I understood that You are going to migrate
from NT 4.0 to Windows 2K. So You need to take down BDC and promote the level of Your domain to Windows 2000. After that You could add the additional DC as Windows 2K. After all when You are completly sure that everything OK You could upgrade Your BDC to Win2K and add this machine as additional DC. From MS Windows 2000 Resource Kit Online Book: "....To receive maximum benefit from Windows 2000 technologies and fully realize your migration-related goals, it is recommended that you switch your Windows 2000 domains to native mode as soon as possible. However, depending on your existing network configuration, you might not be able to switch to native mode until you have completely eliminated Windows NT backup domain controllers (BDCs) from your domain...." But switching to native mode - one way operation.
