Default New York: A Documentary DVD question

There is an 8 disk set with the last episode and an older 7 disk set without
the last episode. However, the 7 disk set is 4:3 and the 8 disk set is
letterbox. Which of these is preferable? (Ignoring the last episode!) The
original aspect ratio is 4:3 but the series is new enough that it's at least
plausible that it was filmed with letterbox in mind. Is there new picture
area in the letterbox version, or did they just crop the top and bottom?
