Default Video capture card

Hi I need some insight on video capture cards. I have a Sony digital cam linked with a firewire to my Dell. I have used MGI Videowave to edit videos before. My problem began after I reformatted my drive. I dont know whether its drivers. MGI has no updates and the camera is simply not recognized. I cannot figure out how I was able to capture video before and unable to now. An MGI test showed that I dont have a card which I found hard to believe. Any suggestions from anyone would greatly help.
