Has anyone got any comments as to what is classed as a good DVD-R disc,

Taiyo Yuden. No others come anywhere close.

We in the states can get them in the $30 range.

As it may take me a while from the UK, trains are not running on time here
at th mo, due to this stuff which we never can handle in this country called
snow!

**Hey, T. Of course, we're open 24/7 I'll have some some pizza and
beer waiting!

Honestly though, if you can, peruse the DVD-R shelf at the store and
look for media that's made in Japan. It'll probably be hard to come by
as it's getting harder to find it on American store shelves. Early
this year, I had no problem locating Maxell (MiJ) and Sony (MiJ). This
Dec., I needed to restock and found that those brands were now made in
Taiwan. Well, for the most part anyway, as more searching lead to, for
instance, printable Maxells that were MiJ while the normal ones were
MiT. I found that most Walmarts that I went to had Sony MiT but my
small hometown Walmart had Sony MiJ. As I needed the -Rs quickly, I
bought them but from now on I'll probably be buying Taiyo Yuden on the
web.

Not only do I buy those DVD-Rs because they are highly recommended by
just about everyone, but also I have a Panasonic e85 that works best
with those. I've tried MiT discs, some have worked okay and some are
rejected outright by the machine.

While it is true that some burners work well with some brands, current
data on all brands except TY show that it's either a crap shoot or
pure crap. This began only a few months ago and caught most people by
surprise. Even venerable brands like Verbatim (rated second to TY)
have shown bad batches. Riteks (third ranked) have also shown sporadic
problems.

It used to be that if a company was based in Japan, they always
shipped high quality optical media. Unfortunately that's no longer
true as of the past few months. Only TY can be trusted until it
violates our trust.

Lately, most brands including name brands have been contracting to CMC
Magnetics in Taiwan. And, CMC Magnetics makes crap. A relative gave
me a 50 disc spindle of HP branded discs. Pure crap -- yep, CMC Mag.

I tried Ritek. Burns good. Plays good. Aha, I thought. But, after
5 of 6 months most of the Ritek's are no longer playable in a
standalone. And, not just mine either. They sorta' play, but will
stall, stutter, and sometimes just plain lockup.

I personally won't buy or use ( - even considering a gifts) anything
BUT Taiyo Yuden. I started using them about 6 months ago and have
never looked back!
