Default DVDSHRINK encoding question

Question regarding DVDSHRINK V3.2...

I have observed, during the encoding process of a movie: The first time I
encode the movie, DVDSHRINK encodes with a rate of approx. 12,000 KB/s - and
the encoding process takes approx 10 minutes...

Now, if I immediatly then try to encode the same movie again, using the same
reader and same parameters, the encoding process now only runs with a rate
of approx. 4,000 KB/s - and naturally takes longer. - A reboot of the system
and running DVDSHRINK again now raises the rate up to approx. 12,000 KB/s
again.

Howcome the second encoding lowers the bitrate ? The drive is hardcoded to
ULTRA DMA (not PIO which would explain the difference) - is it a problem
with the DVDSHRINK, the ATAPI driver or something else ?

Looking for clues...

Cheers,
Joern.

I can't answer your question, but wonder how you get nearly twice the rate I
do.

Could it be my using an older DVD Shrink version (3.1.7.6)?

Maybe because you use the Analysis option before encoding?

I usually just accept the default compression without removing any
components. The compression rate is typically a little over 50% for me.

I have a Pentium D 3ghz, 1GB RAM. One processor core shows as being fully
used for this.

My hard disk is a 7200 rpm 260GB. I could see this being a weakness, but
since the core is fully utilized, I have doubt.

You dont have to remove stuff, just set the extras to the
lowest percentage, highest compression, making sure the movie
itself gets the least amount of compression. Personally i find
no value in trailers and music videos so i remove them, using
the 'still picture' setting giving the movie the most space on
the eventual disc. Also turfing the foreign language subtitles,
audio etc brings the percentage up on the main movie

As for the analyse thing, dvdshrink will do the best possible
shrink job if you let it do a deepscan before compression

That "piracy is a crime" horseshit also gets the intrusively
loud annoying ****ing audio removed. ahhhh silence.

You wouldn't steal a car....well I would if I had to...

From the dvd shrink forum.

if you're talking about reading the dvdr disc you just burned - reading a
dvdr is different to reading an original (s-l) & takes longer. apart from
that, you may try closing shrink fully & then re-starting it again.

if it's not the above, then you may have buffer/cache problems. they're not
being emptied & refreshed fully, or you have lots of other progs/apps
starting/running in the background. if you have "incd" installed, uninstall
it.
