Default how to buy optic cable to connect stereo to true surround sound?

I have never realized, that I was using my computer, take a waveoutput
(stereo jack from the soundcard) and input to a stereo that will give
only simulated surround sound. i read the manual, the right way to do
is to use an optic cable. What is the right cable to order,
multiplex, duplex, PCM, and what jack to use? The one on the stereo
looked like a rectangle that lose two upper corners. Thanks in
advance
