Firefly fans can get another fix on December 20th with the release of the
feature film Serenity. There will be separate Pan & Scan, widescreen and UMD
versions. Each will list for $29.95. The UMD title will have surround audio
while the other two will feature Dolby 5.1. Extras will include:

I'll bet the DVD release schedule was planned back when the movie was
going to hit theaters last spring. Dec 20 is the last date they can
release it in time for Xmas.

Does anybody know how the theatrical release did financially? It
seemed to open well the first weekend but after that I never heard
about it.

But unfortunately, even if it doesn't, the $59.2 million total is rather
short of the $80 million Whedon said he'd need before a sequel would be
considered. So I suppose it's now official that there isn't going to be
any Serenity franchise.

**Well, it remains to be seen how well the DVD release does
money-wise. I think studios earn almost 60% (or more) of their profit
from DVDs now so I'm not sure that the box office numbers are as
relevant as they used to be.

Too bad. I don't see this being a runaway DVD hit like Family Guy and
getting a new project greenlighted -- Firefly/Serenity is too
expensive to shoot.

Surviving Christmas was released on DVD 2 months after its
theatrical release last year.
