Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of BEN HUR: FOUR-DISC COLLECTOR'S
EDITION, DEAD AND BREAKFAST: UNRATED EDITION, THE GARBO SILENTS COLLECTION, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH: CRITERION COLLECTION, THE OUTSIDERS: THE COMPLETE NOVEL, STORY OF A PROSTITUTE: CRITERION COLLECTION, TOP HAT, UNLEASHED, WHIRLPOOL, and THE WORK OF DIRECTOR JONATHAN GLAZER: BEN HUR: FOUR-DISC COLLECTOR'S EDITION (reviewed by Ryan Keefer, overall score 99/100): "Easily the best release of 2005 by a major studio. Good documentary material? Check? The original silent film? Check. Restored video transfer? Check. Warner Brothers has given Ben-Hur such outstanding love and attention, it truly is a Special Edition, and must be on any film fan's shelf." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/benhurce.php DEAD AND BREAKFAST: UNRATED EDITION (reviewed by Mac McEntire, overall score 90/100): "And then, when the zombie attack starts in full, it's gorehound heaven. Heads explode, shotgun wounds burst, and stabbings, stabbings, stabbings. The red stuff is everywhere, and the creators aren't shy about showing it off at every opportunity." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/deadandbreakfast.php THE GARBO SILENTS COLLECTION (reviewed by James A. Stewart, overall score 86/100): "If you're at all interested in silent films or Greta Garbo, buy this collection. The films chosen are excellent examples of what a movie can do, and the TCM extras are excellent examples of what a distributor can do with a DVD package." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/garbosilents.php THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Bill Gibron, overall score 96/100): "It is interesting to note that Newton's ultimate downfall does not come at the hands of his friends, or his female companion, but at his own blindness to the government's need for power. Sovereignty is saved and maintained by such authority and influence." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/ma...lcriterion.php THE OUTSIDERS: THE COMPLETE NOVEL (reviewed by Ryan Keefer, overall score 89/100): "While The Outsiders may not be the epic film that a lot of people had in mind, it definitely improves an average film, and its devotion to the source material makes it an enjoyable ride all the way through. It's safe to say that those who liked the first film will love this version, and those who haven't seen the first film will enjoy this film regardless of what was put in or taken out." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/outsidersse.php STORY OF A PROSTITUTE: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Adam Arseneau, overall score 94/100): "If you have seen Suzuki's other more recognized works, like Tokyo Drifter and Branded To Kill, Story of a Prostitute is as polar opposite a transition as possible, veering as far away from the films that made him infamous as could be. Ironic then that Story of a Prostitute could very well be Suzuki's finest cinematic achievement to date." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/storyprostitute.php TOP HAT (reviewed by Bryan Pope, overall score 90/100): "Together, spinning and tapping their way through ten -- count 'em -- light-as-meringue musicals, easing a weary United States through a depression, momentarily taking people's minds off an impending world war, they were pure cinematic magic." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/tophat.php UNLEASHED (reviewed by David Johnson, overall score 92/100): "I'm a big Jet Li fan. And as someone who has been fairly disappointed with his recent spat of hip hop kung-fu junk, Unleashed is a blast of healing tonic. It's not just a great Jet Li film. It's a great film." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/unleashed.php WHIRLPOOL (reviewed by James A. Stewart, overall score 89/100): "When the mystery flags, however, the actors take over with fine performances -- especially Tierney as the troubled woman caught in a frame, and Ferrer as the slimy and perhaps equally disturbed Korvo -- that make you want to stick around to see how it plays out." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/whirlpool.php THE WORK OF DIRECTOR JONATHAN GLAZER (reviewed by Bill Gibron, overall score 90/100): "In Glazer's case, however, the difference between his big and small screen efforts is almost invisible. Indeed, throughout most of the material here, you will see his interests and his propensities spelled out in sensational optical excellence, no matter the format."
