Default Help!!! Advice on tech question, please...

Hey folks,
I want to buy the Westinghouse 37" LCD TV, but whenever I play a 1.35:1
foreign movie the subtitles go off the bottom of the screen and I can't read
them.
A friend of mine said there are certain brands and models of DVD players
that have a "screen shift position" function that allows you to move the
screen up/down/left/right which would solve this problem.
Is this true and if so, could you tell me which brand of DVD player has
this feature.
Thanks.
Eddie

You must have it in some sort of "zoom" mode to try to fill the screen.
The picture is enlarged, sending the subtitles off the screen.

The proper way to play a 4:3 program is in "normal" mode, or whatever it's
called on that set, that leaves black bars on the sides of the picture.
Then the top and bottom of the picture will be at the top and bottom of
the screen.

Hello Eddie, The majority of NEW TVs sold in the US are set to overscan.
That is, the picture on the screen is set at the factory to be a bit larger
than it is supposed to...!

To check your set, look at the Disney channel and look at the info crawl at
the bottom of the screen. If the set is overscanning then the info crawl
will be partly cut off. Same thing for news crawl on CNN Headline news.
If you see the news crawl even with the bottom of the TV screen, then your
TV is Overscanning.

What you would need to do, is to call the TV store & have them adjust the
set.
