Default HD-DVD

With HD-DVD, are your existing DVD's obsolete? Or do they play normal
DVD's, but just uses an HD signal?

Just like your DVD player will play CDs, an HD-DVD player will play DVDs
(and CDs as well).

I hope you are right...I'd be sick knowing that my current collection is
obsolete.
Honestly though, I can't see how they can improve on it...I was watching JFK
and thinking, how can it get any better. I actually feel that DVD is a
better picture than the HD channels I get from my cable company.

Know anything about upconverters? Are they worth the money?

Backwards compatibility has been confirmed by both the HD-DVD and
Blu-Ray camps.

Your current DVD player going to stop working all of a sudden the day
HD-DVD comes out?

what size and type of tv do you have? On my 50" Samsung DLP 720p set,
DVDs look ok, but the limitation is VERY noticeable and this on a Oppo
DVD player which uses teh Faroudja DCDi chip to upconvert to 720p and
DVI out.

Even on my 32" Wega and Sony 7000, artifacting and especially
edge-enhancements are easily visible.

I knew ALOT of people who said they couldn't see much of a difference
b/w VHS and DVD when DVDs first came out, but after watching DVDs for a
while, they then very much noticed the difference when they tried to
watch VHS agin. This will likely be true with a 1080p source in the
future.

Although, I'll agree with most people who've poasted on the topic that
I don't see a glaring call for HD-DVD not BluRay and the format war is
going to set it back. I'm normally an early adopter but this one is
one i'm sitting out.

Then your cable company is compressing the signal or compromising it
in some other way. I look at HD video all day long. Trust me, true HD
is quite a noticable improvement in quality over NTSC DVDs.

It depends on your definition of "obsolete." DVD-A and SACD have been
around for time now, but the good ol' standard audio CD has yet to be
rendered obsolete, at least not in the majority of homes. Keep in mind
there is going to be an HD format war as well, which could easily go on
for many years. Until this format war is over, regular DVD should likely
remain king and will certainly not be obsolete by anyones standards.

As other posters have noted in this thread, even a lot of the early
adopters are going to hold back because of the format war.

According to the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray camps, the players will be backwards
compatible with DVDs(thank god). So the transition shouldn't be nearly
as painful as going from VHS to DVD. Although there are A LOT of people
who are going to have to put down large chunks of cash to aquire HDTVs..

Well duh...I know that..lol. But its kind of like when DVD came out and you
have a VHS and a collection of tapes. You know you can still watch them,
but you'd be wanting to replace every single movie you want to keep with
DVD.

I have a Sony WEGA 51" projection with HDMI inputs.
