Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of ADMISSIONS, ANATOMY OF A SHARK
BITE, CLASH BY NIGHT, DANCE FOR CAMERA, DILLINGER, EM EMBALMING, THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MOVIE, THE GETAWAY: DELUXE EDITION, THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT, IN MY COUNTRY, and TETSUO: THE IRON MAN: ADMISSIONS (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 85/100): "This is quite obviously yet another one of those highly charged, relationship- driven films, full of flawed, intentionally quirky characters, that seems to flood independent theaters every year in an endless, undecipherable mass. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that Admissions is not only well acted (which is to be expected from such a capable cast), but an interesting drama that takes on some issues and ideas that aren't often explored in teen-oriented films." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/admissions.php ANATOMY OF A SHARK BITE (reviewed by David Johnson, overall score 75/100): " This data-collecting journey will bring in professionals from around the world, involve people putting their limbs on the line as they study the beasts up close, and cost big, big money to build a mechanical shark, with all of it leading to conclusions that are, pretty much, common sense." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/anatomysharkbite.php CLASH BY NIGHT (reviewed by Joe Armenio, overall score 82/100): "Clash by Night begins with a long, virtually dialogue-free documentary sequence showing the activities of Jerry's fishing boat. Much of the film was made on location in northern California, a rarity for a Hollywood film of the period (although by 1952 Italian neorealism had begun to influence some Hollywood filmmakers, resulting in a brief vogue for location shooting). It's rare for a Hollywood film to avoid plot and character for quite this long, and it's a beautiful, atmospheric sequence, riveting in a way that the rest of the film is not." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/clashbynight.php DANCE FOR CAMERA (reviewed by Bryan Byun, overall score 65/100): "Just as the power of musicals lies in their ability to capture certain feelings or ideas more effectively through music than any other form, the best moments in these films tell stories that cannot be told by means other than the motion and intersection of bodies." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/danceforcamera.php DILLINGER (reviewed by Maurice Cobbs, overall score 63/100): "Tierney was the real deal, a grade-A hell-raiser, twice as tough as a boiled owl and meaner than diarrhea. A six-foot-one-inch mass of pure venom who could eat Russell Crowe for breakfast and pick his teeth with Sean Penn. As Dillinger, he brings a spectacularly feral presence to the screen, practically radiating malice from his cold, cruel eyes, with his features etched in a permanent scowl." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/dillinger.php EM EMBALMING (reviewed by Adam Arseneau, overall score 57/100): "There is nothing quite like a film devoted entirely to the subject of embalming, by which I mean, no other film has been stupid enough to try it." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/emembalming.php THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MOVIE (reviewed by Patrick Naugle, overall score 40/100): "Shoddily made and thrown together does not adequately describe this celluloid turd. The movie has grown into cult status, but I can't imagine anyone enjoying it -- there isn't enough camp value to make it fun, and the storyline and dialogue is straight out of the scribbling of a sixth grader's notebook." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/garbagepailkids.php THE GETAWAY: DELUXE EDITION (reviewed by Maurice Cobbs, overall score 82/100): "The Getaway is a raw, riveting movie that runs hot and cold and moves along at a torrid pace, resonating with explosive violence, featuring harsh, brutal characters and a plot that doesn't always make perfect sense -- all of which makes this the filmic equivalent of a Mickey Spillane novel." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/getawayde.php THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT (reviewed by George Hatch, overall score 72/100): "Glass Bottom Boat has more sight gags and slap-shtick humor than dialogue, and enough French-farce doors slamming to create a small hurricane. But, the overall effect is that of a dog-day August afternoon: stale, oppressive and unmoving." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/glassbottomboat.php IN MY COUNTRY (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 74/100): "In My Country is the film equivalent of dreadful historical romance novels, which use historical education as a cover for lousy prose and paint-by-number plots. The impact of the great scenes are destroyed by poor choices, and the blandness of the main story is emphasized by the powerful nature of the events around it." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/inmycountry.php TETSUO: THE IRON MAN (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 83/100): "Although it shows the influence of filmmakers David Cronenberg and David Lynch, as well as cyberpunk author William Gibson, Tetsuo: The Iron Man stands completely on its own as a grotesque, moving cyber- painting."
