Toshiba Backs Holographic Storage Technology Toshiba may be feeling the pressure over the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray saga, but they are already looking to the future and the next (next) generation of optical storage. Toshiba is one of four companies that have invested in Optware, a start-up developing the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) that could eventually replace HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and provide 1 terabyte of storage. However, Optware are starting more conservatively and plan 100-200GB discs for 2006 or 2007. Toshiba declined to comment on the investment, only to say that HVD was just one of many possibilities they were investigating for the future of optical storage.
