Default DVD changer recommendation

I am in the market for a DVD changer that holds around 400 DVD's. I
currently have a Sony CD Changer (400 cd's) and an older Toshiba DVD player.
I would prefer having one piece of hardware to service both DVD's and CD's.
In looking around, I have found DVD changers that almost meet my needs. The
unit would have to play both 6 channel SACD and DVD-Audio, plus VCD's and
SVCD's. I can find changers what will play either SACD or DVD-Audio, but not
both. I would even consider a system that copies all your DVD's to your
harddrive, such as the one made by http://www.kaleidescape.com, but their
unit does not do CD's, just DVD's. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I've also never seen one that would play both SACD and DVD-Audio, so you
might have to go with one that just plays SACD's and stick with the DD
tracks for DVD-Audio. I prefer SACD anyway

I dont believe there are any universal changers out there yet, especially
not what I call mega changers. I *believe* Yamaha is about to or has just
released a universal carousel changer(5 or 6 disk capacity)... Check out
the dvd player forum at www.avsforums.com

There are lots of 5-6 disc universal changers out there (Onkyo, Yamaha,
Toshiba, Denon...many more) but no universal mega changers that I know of.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I have a bunch of DVD-Audio disks I would like
to be able to play. I think I have seen mega changers that will play this
format, but I had hoped to be able to play SACD as well. I suppose I will
just have to settle for just one of the two formats.

Just keep in mind that SACD requires a dedicated player but DVD-A can be
played in any DVD player, just not the MLP track. If you get a player that
only supports SACD at least you can still listen to DVD-A, but if you get
one that supports only DVD-A then your SACD's are useless.

It's not a changer, it only plays single discs, but I'd highly recommend
either the Denon DVD-2910 or 3910 (or even the 5910 although that one's a
bit of overkill pricewise). These players play all the audiophile formats
including SACD, play and display both PAL and NTSC video without the need of
an external converter, will play writable media like CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, and
frankly, are at the top end of audio and video quality of *any* players on
the market. Plus, you can easily modify the player to be region-free with a
simple flash update found on many websites so basically, you can watch or
listen to anything from anywhere in the world. There isn't a cheapo Hong
Kong player around that's not only as versatile but is truly an audiophile's
dream.

I own the 3910 and can confidently say I'll never need another dvd player.

T.B.

I was thinking in terms of a mega changer for the convenience and
integration. With a 400 capacity changer, I could store all my CD's and
DVD's, for now and most likely forever. Not to be cynical, but I really
think that the difference in video quality between a mid-line changer and an
audiophile player is probably not all that visible. Frankly, I doubt that I
would perceive a difference. and, at this point I watch a lot of HDTV, so my
DVD viewing will be limited, although it will increase during the summer
months when the networks show primarily reruns.

In looking around, I have become intrigued by the Kenwood Sovereign system.
It combines a 400 disk DVD player (that plays DVD-Audio but not SACD) and a
media server. What I like about the media server, amongst other things, is
that it will download the CD and DVD information, and artwork in some cases,
so that I can easily identify all my disks. With my Sony CD megachanger, I
have to burn cdtext disks form the originals after loading the original CD
into my computer and downloading the information from the CDDB. This has
become a tremendous hassle, almost not worth it (very few CD's come with
cdtext, but it can be added as I described). I wonder if there are any other
internet-enabled changers what can perform this function. In order to get
the Sovereign to do it, I would have to purchase two components.

The Kenwood unit is awesome, except that it is a POS from readings I have
seen elsewhere. Try doing an archive search for it at www.avsforums.com
under the dvd player sub-forum..

Hollywood is lobbying hard for stopping all media server technologies now,
and have in fact sued a number of smaller manufacturers under the DMCA.
