Default DVDs, Win98 & 4Gb file size limit

Hi,

Is it possbile to work with DVDs using Win98?

In particular I am thinking of the 4Gb file size limit of Win98's FAT32 file
system. If I want to create an iso image of a DVD on my 40Gb hard drive,
CloneDVD is complaining that my drive doesn't support files larger that 4Gb.
I can repartition the drive to have a 10GB (for example) NTFS partition
(that does support files > 4Gb) but this partition will not be recognised by
Win98

I really do prefer Win98 to XP but cannot see a way around this problem.

Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated

TIA

mori

Save the files as a directory instead of an iso image. You should be
able to burn that to a DVD, and you should be able to play it on your
computer with a media player.

That works for me with Nero 6 and WMP or WinDVD (but then I have
XP/NTFS anyway).

I know there are programs that will enable Win Me and Win 98 to read
NTFS. Maybe by now someone has created a read-write program.

HTH,
Gino

Check sysinternals.com. I believe they have a utility that will allow
ntfs for DOS - win 98.

There ain't no way around this barrier.
Win '98 isn't suitable for DVD work in general.
You're gonna have to upgrade.
I'd suuggest Win2K Pro in your case.

You'll also find that 40GB of hard disk space is, in the long run,
inadequate.

I gotta admit, I did this as well, on a 550 mHz P III, with 98, took
forever, couldn't really do anything else. Had to buy a Hauppauge
PVR-350 ( Hardware MPEG 2 encoding - direct to HD ) to avoid re-encoding
and to get around file size limitations (BEST thing I ever did, love
it!). I was using the Hauppauge WinTV PCI, recording uncompressed into
an AVI, 15 minutes at a time, and forget recording anything on TV (there
are capture programs that get around this by breaking up recording into
separate files ).

One night, after a 25 hour encoding session, I was left with a 4.5 gb
image that I couldn't save!!!!! (built a new machine! GA-8KNXP/3.0 gb P IV)

What I'm trying to say is, what is Your time worth? Is this Your only
machine? How much video work are You planning on doing?

I fought XP for a year, didn't think Bill needed my money. Finally gave
in. I am really glad that I did, don't regret it for a moment.

One important note, if You are going to upgrade an existing drive, then
convert it to NFTS, You should carefully read this;

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...reinstall.mspx

ya, it gave me a headache too, but it's important. There are simpler
instructions but they are hard to find - Google on!

Best of Luck

For other users of the H250/350/USB2 capture devices, please be aware that
the WinTV2000 app has the option of breaking your captures into specified
file sizes. This in not only handy for FAT(32) users, but simplifies the
capture then burn DVD steps, as one does not have to deal with file sizes
beyond the desired media system.

Here's a sample registry entry to write files of 700 mB

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hauppauge\hcwSlipWrite r]
"File_Record_Size"=dword:000002bc

Note the hex "2bc" is 700 decimal and that 1 = 1 mB. Hex "400" is 1024 and
would write 1gB files.

My words precisely. If you take DVD authoring seriously you deal with
files ~4GB regularly and it does not make sense to spend time on
figuring out how to fight limitations of an OS. There is still enough
real challenges in DVD authoring process anyway.

As for converting FAT to NTFS, no headache here. My laptop came with
XP pre-installed on FAT32, converting to NTFS was the first thing I've
done (convert.exe only). Absolutely no problems there. The cluster
size might not be optimal, but for DVD authoring I use 2 external 7200
rpm 200 MB discs anyway.
