Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, THE DIVINE
BETTE MIDLER, THE GODFATHER: PART II, THE GODFATHER: PART III, HUMORESQUE, JAWS: 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION, STORY OF A LOVE AFFAIR, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS: CRITERION COLLECTION, WHITE NOISE, and X: LIVE IN LOS ANGELES: THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score 94/100): "Blackboard Jungle remains an energetic and absorbing film experience -- gritty, vital, hugely influential." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/blackboardjungle.php THE DIVINE BETTE MIDLER (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score 85/100): "She's a tough broad with a big mouth, big nose, big boobs, and an undeniable talent for delivering big ballads. She's kind of like a Jewish Billie Holiday, or a frumpy, Caucasian Nina Simone." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/divinebettemidler.php THE GODFATHER: PART II (reviewed by Lacey Worrell, overall score 90/100): "Several years ago I had the misfortune of reviewing what might possibly be one of the worst films ever, Juwanna Man, about a guy who dresses in drag to play basketball. That DVD had deleted scenes, a featurette, outtakes, and even a music video. Although I understand that typically the discs offered through Paramount's budget-priced 'Widescreen Collection' are short on extras, this is the freaking Godfather, for crying out loud!" FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/godfatherpart2.php THE GODFATHER: PART III (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score 88/100): "The Godfather: Part III is a fascinating but flawed conclusion to one of the greatest achievements in American film. Michael Corleone's final moment is deeply moving, even if it did not become the cinematic iconography that Coppola undoubtedly intended." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/godfatherpart3.php HUMORESQUE (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 85/100): "As its inclusion in the Joan Crawford Collection testifies, Humoresque is typically thought of as one of Joan Crawford's most effective star vehicles, with many fans declaring that her turn as Helen Wright is one of her best performances as an actress. Though she does have her moments, this reviewer still finds it hard to label this kind of diva act (even with the liberal utilization of tears in the characterization) as true acting." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/humoresque.php JAWS: 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (reviewed by David Ryan, overall score 94/100): "Thirty years on, Jaws is still one of Spielberg's best films, and is still the gold standard by which other summer action thrillers are measured. Although it's a close call, this disc is just barely worth the double-dip, thanks mainly to Universal's two concessions to the film's fans." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/jaws30th.php STORY OF A LOVE AFFAIR (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 95/100): "Though failing to gather much critical or popular response at the time of its release, Story of a Love Affair is the film that kicked off one of the most renowned careers in cinema. That it's a wonderful film besides is just icing on the cake." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/storyloveaffair.php UNFAITHFULLY YOURS: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Amanda DeWees, overall score 98/100): "It's clear to twenty-first-century eyes that Unfaithfully Yours is a brilliant black comedy that suffered from bad timing. It's both a simple, universal story of jealousy and a richly layered commentary on a proliferation of subjects, everything from art and love and culture to the frustrations of trying to operate a cantankerous household appliance." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/unfaithfullyyours.php WHITE NOISE (reviewed by Dennis Prince, overall score 91/100): "Call it hackneyed and hopeful, but there does seem to be something of interest in the core concept of White Noise. Unfortunately, screenwriter Niall Johnson never quite gets over the wide-eyed wonder of EVP's premise to truly do much significant with the idea." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/whitenoise.php X: LIVE IN LOS ANGELES (reviewed by Russell Engebretson, overall score 90/100): "This concert disc is a must-own for the fan, of course, and I heartily recommend a rental to anyone who is even marginally interested in the punk, new wave, or alternative genres of rock music. X can be compared to Black Flag, The Clash, or other punk rockers of that time, but they forged their own unique sound in the '80s and created music that transcends mere commercial product." Just skimmed your review of Jaws and it's chock full of errors, most of
which can be corrected just by *watching* the DVD, which I have to assume your reviewer didn't do. Who writes these things?!? John -- Von Herzen, moge es wieder zu Herzen gehen. --Beethoven The Man Behind The Curtain |
