Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of ALI THE FIGHTER, DAIMAJIN / RETURN
OF DAIMAJIN / WRATH OF DAIMAJIN, GIGGLE, GIGGLE, QUACK... AND MORE FUNNY
FAVORITES, NBA HARDWOOD CLASSICS: EWING, JORDAN, AND OLAJUWON, NOT ON
THE LIPS (PAS SUR LA BOUCHE), RECONSTRUCTION, SEPARATE BUT EQUAL,
SHANGHAI GHETTO, WHEN FATHER WAS AWAY ON BUSINESS, and WHITE THUNDER:

ALI THE FIGHTER (reviewed by David Ryan, overall score 87/100):
"Ali the Fighter is a contemporaneous documentary of that fight, which
is considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight championship fight
ever. Unavailable in any format until now, it's grainy, worn-looking,
and sounds terrible -- but all that is ultimately unimportant."

DAIMAJIN / RETURN OF DAIMAJIN / WRATH OF DAIMAJIN (reviewed by Mike
Pinsky, overall score 85/100):
"Like many boys of my generation, I grew up watching kaiju movies on the
local independent television station on Saturdays and Sundays. Of
course, we did not call them kaiju -- they were just 'giant monster'
movies. They all followed a familiar set of rules: Aliens or demons or
some lost undersea kingdom would invade Japan. Little boys in short
pants would cry out for help, while scientists and military types would
glower ineffectively. Eventually, a giant rubbery monster would show up
for a fight among noticeably miniature landscapes. Goodness would
prevail, and the monster hero would head out to sea or back into space,
hoping to catch a nap before the next entry in the series."

GIGGLE, GIGGLE, QUACK... AND MORE FUNNY FAVORITES (reviewed by Bryan
Pope, overall score 90/100):
"Don't be surprised if, after watching this collection, your little one
insists on a trip to the library to check out the Scholastic books on
which these stories are based. In the meantime, be prepared to do some
giggling of your own."

NBA HARDWOOD CLASSICS: EWING, JORDAN, AND OLAJUWON (reviewed by David
Johnson, overall score 82/100):
"Today finds me a casual fan of the Knicks, as they consistently
struggle in sub-mediocrity through the seasons, making me wistful for
the days long gone. The days when I would gather with my family, decked
out in every piece of Knicks regalia at my disposal, eating Little
Caesar's pizza, crafting the eloquent splashes of trash talk I would
berate my friends with at the school the next day, and thinking, game
after game, that maybe -- just maybe -- this was the Knicks' year."

NOT ON THE LIPS (PAS SUR LA BOUCHE) (reviewed by Joe Armenio, overall
score 90/100):
"The cast and Resnais do an excellent job of taking this cast of stock
characters and turning them into genuinely lovable figures; the uplift
at the end, when the characters are matched in accordance with comic
tradition, feels earned and satisfying."

RECONSTRUCTION (reviewed by Adam Arseneau, overall score 83/100):
"Reconstruction has serious identity issues, throwing against the wall
dashes of Lynchian oddness, New Wave surrealism, experimental art-house
cinema, romance, and anything else it deems appropriate -- some of which
sticks, and some of which does not."

FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/reconstruction.php

SEPARATE BUT EQUAL (reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall score 86/100):
"Separate But Equal may prove that our country is capable of changing
and correcting the mistakes of the past, but it also proves that those
changes can only come when great individuals rise to the occasion."

FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/separatebutequal.php

SHANGHAI GHETTO (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 85/100):
"Though it holds the distinction of being narrated by Oscar-winning
actor Martin Landau (Ed Wood), and features an original score by
composer Sujin Nam (performed by violinist Karen Han, who also
contributed to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's mesmerizing score), it
doesn't really do anything to distinguish itself from countless informative-but-merely-
competent documentaries that run on PBS and the History Channel all
the time."

WHEN FATHER WAS AWAY ON BUSINESS (reviewed by Joe Armenio, overall
score 85/100):
"Watching a film made in Yugoslavia in the 1980s is a melancholy
experience, knowing that the country would be wrecked by war within a
few short years, although the movie's plot reminds us that things were
never idyllic there."

WHITE THUNDER (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score 83/100):
"In this fascinating footage of a forgotten era, White Thunder presents
compelling evidence that Frissell was developing into a sophisticated
documentarian before his life was cut short by a bizarre and still-
unexplained explosion."
