I thought I remembered big text stating "To be continued" at the end
of Back to the Future (1) as the car is flying away. Did they remove
it for the DVD?

Google is your friend...

This was hashed about in this NG ad nauseam when the trilogy was first
introduced on DVD. The "Reader's Digest" version is that the DVD *IS*
the theatrical presentation. The "To Be Continued" teaser was tacked
onto the home video presentation so as to advertise for the sequel.

Apparently the original theatrical release didn't have the TO BE
CONTINUED... tag and it only appeared on the home video version. Wanting
the DVD to reflect the theatrical cut, the producers opted to remove the
TBC. Personally, I prefer the TBC as it enhances the ending, I think they
made a poor choice removing it for the DVD. They are selling it as the
trilogy, after all.

Not that it matters, but it was strange not seeing it, and then I
wondered if my memory was failing me (maybe I confused it with another
movie).

Ideally, they should have included both versions as a branching option.

For 5 seconds of an on-screen title??? Come on! That's a little much if
you ask me.

In the DVD commentary track for "Back to the Future," it's confirmed that
"To Be Continued" was added to the VHS release, and was not in the
theatrical version.

Not that that settled the argument that was raging at the time.

I thought it was hysterical that the person insisting that the tag was in there
originally refused to believe that word of the film's director that it wasn't.

I would personally prefer to have it in there, as it adds continuity to
the trilogy as a single package.
