Anyone pick up The New Scooby Doo Movies "Best Of"?
While I'm happy some of these episodes finally made it to DVD, most of the fan favorites (the Sonny & Cher, Addams Family, & Jerry Reed episodes) didn't. I'm sure this was due to rights issues involving the actors' voices. But this led to a really bad editing job in the opening credits to each episode. For those who recall the original airings of these shows, it starts with Shaggy & Scooby looking up to discover a group shot of the Addams Family. But since the AF episode isn't on this set, they went back and took out the Addams Family shot and replaced it with a scene from another episode. Not only was this poorly edited into the opening credits, but it was a scene from the haunted castle episode with Davy Jones, which ironically, isn't included in the set either! Also, whoever did the audio remastering on these DVDs should be shot. While I hate having the laugh tracks over these episodes, I could've learned to tolerate them, but appears that on the most of the episodes they've cranked up the laugh tracks so loud that at times they overlap dialogue and you can't hear what people are saying! Now, I don't want to come off sounding like a total geek, (I'm sure I did anyway), I just thought those die-hard purists who grew up watching these shows in their childhood (like me), would want to know about this. I had considered picking this up but when I heard that the Sonny and
Xher one was not going to be on (the one I remember most vividly) and the roundabout $50 pricetag, I declined. It also stinks that they modify the openings too. About the audio, I think it just reflects the higher dynamic range of DVD sound. The soundtracks were originally built for more compressed range TV sound. I also noted how cranked up the laugh tracks sound on Flintstones and Hogan's Heros. I think it comes from a more precise recreation of the original soundtrack with canned laughter mixed in to be able to be heard on the limited TV audio of the time.
