Default Do you buy P&S if no WS available?

Hi All,

I would like to know what everyone does in this situation.

It's an older movie (80's), not unheard of (All of Me, for example)
and they have only released a Pan & Scan version.

Do you buy this now, since this is what's available?

Or do you wait, hoping that buy not buying it, the studio will get the
hint and release a widescreen version?

There are several of these that I have not bought, because if they
ever release a 'real' version, then I just wasted money. No, they are
not expensive, but $10 is $10.

Thoughts & comments?

Thanks

I wait. There are so many movies on my "want list" that I can always select
other titles to purchase instead.

I will buy a P&S if no WS is available BUT it must be some title I
really want badly!

As a rule though if no WS is available I will either wait until the P&S
version hits rock bottom price (the infamous $5.50 bin at Walmart for
example) or more likely still I will simply wait until it comes on one
of my HBO or Encore packages (hopefully in letterbox) and record it on
my Pioneer 220 for the cost of a blank DVD-R disc (about $.42 )and wait
for it to come out in WS.

In virtually every case I would not buy it. If it's open matte, I might
buy a full screen version, but even then, I'd prefer the widescreen
version in most cases.

Generally speaking, no. I did once break this rule though. It was for
the Waxwork 1 & 2 double feature. Since it included both movies for just
$10, I broke down and bought it. Luckily, it's open-matte, not pan &
scan. However, the transfers and the audio leave much to be desired.
Bare bones for both movies as well. But it's Artisan, so I can't expect
much...

Same here. Still waiting for the widescreen "Fierce Creatures".

Same here, it depends on the movie and the rarity and how much I want
it. It also depends on the original aspect ratio. Open matte is easier
to take but cropped panavision/cinemascope? Well, let's put it this way,
although I've been waiting for Colosis:The Forbin Project, I have not
bought the pan and scan DVD. I might if it gets to be $5.00. How To Beat
The High Cost Of Living was open matte and not nearly as much a proble
for mwe to tollerate.

Honestly, there are only a few movies I care about enough to demand
widescreen only and then I'd buy a pan and scan if there were no
widescreen.

I usually try for widescreen, but I picked up Seabiscuit for $10.00 and
found out only later that it was p&s. Too bad because Seabiscuit has some
interesting footage in it. But you know what? I just don't care enough
about that movie to worry about it either way.

Now you talk about the Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Silence of the Lambs,
Amadeus. Hey baby, give me that widescreen! THESE FILMS ARE CLASSICS
GODDAMN IT!!!! Pulp Fiction, O Brother Where Art Thou and Basic Instinct
are films I care about enough to get a widescreen even if there's already a
p&s on my shelf. But, of course all of these films were bought in
widescreen originally.

One film I have in p&s and have not gotten in widescreen is The
Committments. and this is a film I care about enough to get the widescreen.
But, I just have not gotten around to watching the p&s version and doubt
I'll watch the widescreen for at least a few months if I did buy the WS.

Just so many discs and so little time. dear, dear, dear...
