okay. I can complain now. Even though the box doesn't mention the sound
format, on the back of the box it says "The Complete Second Season". and to me, it's not the "complete" season on the dvd since season 2 was in stereo and all episodes on the season 2 are mono except one. To me, this means I am getting only part of the show on dvd instead of the "complete" show on dvd as adverised. mono copies of stereo shows cancel out some naturally heard out-of-phase sounds that you hear in the stereo version. therefore, mono opies of stereoshows are not complete, in my opinion. and that might even explain the few instances of certain hard to hear stuff in a few places of the episodes on the dvd set. Normally I would say this is false advertising, however after examining the episodes on the dvd's closely, I belive it was an honest unintentional goof-up by the company. I guess I should be glad that we got at least one season 2 episode in it's original stereo format on the dvd set. Although I would of course, have preferred all of the season 2 episodes to have been in their original stereo format instead of just the one episode. I'm pretty sure all of the season 2 episodes were made and broadcast in stereo. Unfortunately, they're not that way on the dvd set except for "Urban Fear" And watching "Urban Fear" on the dvd surprised me since it turrns out that Punky Brewster actually had good stereo sound on it. (for the tme it was made. It's only meant to be 2 channel stereo as far as I know) Channel separation was very evident. I could easily hear the stereo in the theme song, the incidental music, and the laugh track. Oh, only if they had released every season 2 episode in it's original stereo sound on the dvd instead of using mono copies of every episode on the dvd (except for the one mentioned above), how great the episodes on the dvd would have sounded. As Doctor Smith of "Lost in Space" would have aid "Oh, the pain, the pain". If you have the dvd set and a stereo amp or surround sound amp, you can check for yourself how great the set could have and would have sounded if they had used the correct stereo copies instead of using the mono copies of stereo episodes by checking out and watching the one and only season 2 episode that they somehow miracously managed to use the correct copy of: "Punky Brewster: Urban Fear" However, all in all, I did enjoy the episodes and the dvd set. But it could have been better by simply using the original stereo copies instead of the mono copies they used of episodes that were originally in stereo. Well, on the bright side, we at least got one episode in it's original stereo format on the dvd. It's unlikely that it would be that way in the syndicated reruns on tv since most of the syndicated reruns I've seen on tv of early stereo tv shows were all mono copies in the syndicated reruns, on the stereo tv stations. Later stereo tv shows stayed in stereo on the syndicated reruns on stereo tv stations. All of NBC's prime time lineup (with the exception of 1 or 2 shows) went to being in stereo as soon as the fall 1985 season started (the 1985 to 1986 tv season). Punky Brewster was one of the shows that went to stereo then. CBS's prime-time lineup went in stereo in the fall of 1988 (the 1988 to 1989 tv season). Most of ABC's prime-time lineup went in stereo in the fall of 1989 (the 1989 to 1990 tv season) although ABC also had shows that changed somewhere between 1985 and 1990 and some that were stereo from the start in between those years). so I could say ABC's conversion to stereo was a more gradual process. The ABC exceptions to this for scripted prime-time entertainment was "Growing Pains" and "Just the Ten o US" which both remained in mono until the end of their runs. I liked when oe of the episodes of Growing Pains said "in mono where available" on the screen. But there's another certain one-episode opening credits of Growing Pains that I liked even better. I don't quite remember when the FOX network shows went to stereo, or if that was almost all at once like NBC and CBS or if it was gradual like ABC, or if it was stereo from the beginning or not. But the fact is, season 2 of Punky Brewster should be in stereo. And I'm pretty sure that that was the first season of Punky Brewster produced in stereo. I'm pretty sure season 1 of "Punky Brewster was produced in mono and season 2 produced and aired in stereo. So, mono sound is okay on the season 1 set to me, and preferrable since that was the original season 1 format. but the original stereo sound is preferrable to me on the season 2 set since that was the original season 2 format. Although none of them do, all of the episodes on the season 2 set should sound like "Punky Brewster: Urban Fear" does on the dvd set. and unfortunately, none of them do. However, after saying that, all in all, I still enjoyed the set and enjoyed the episodes on the season 2 set very much. dvdguy2@webtv.net |

Can you tell me whether Season 2 was in stereo or mono? -- Cheers Oldus Fartus Oldus Fartus |

I was going to reply to this poster with a pretty good explanation and
answer to his gripe but once I realized who the poster was I changed my mind. Joe Phillips |
