Is Columbia/Tristar (or whoever has the rights to distribute it) planning to
do a proper release of this film or does it have to be imported to get a
proper copy?

I believe it was matted, so while it's a narrowscreen version, it's not P&S.
I'm with you though, I have personally refused to purchase it, even though I
really like the movie.
