Default DVD Verdict reviews: THE RANCH, ROSELAND, RIDING HIGH (1950), and more!

Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of FOREVER EVIL, GARGOYLE: WINGS
OF DARKNESS, THE PICKLE, THE RANCH, RIDING HIGH (1950), ROSELAND,
and 301, 302:

FOREVER EVIL (reviewed by David Johnson, overall score 58/100):
"This movie sucked when I rented it years and years ago on VHS, and it
still sucks today on DVD."

GARGOYLE: WINGS OF DARKNESS (reviewed by David Johnson, overall
score 65/100):
"Okay, here's my question. How come people who vanquish evil hundreds
of years ago never finish the job the first time and end up leaving
hapless folks in the 21st century to clean up their mess? Seriously,
take care of business the first time, and we won't have to sit through
filth like this."

THE PICKLE (reviewed by Mitchell Hattaway, overall score 40/100):
"I honestly can't imagine what was going through the mind of writer-
director Paul Mazursky when he concocted the idea for this film. Did
this honestly seem like a good idea? Satirize the mentality of blockbuster-
minded Hollywood executives with a story about an intergalactic
cucumber? Yeah, that'll work."

THE RANCH (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score 50/100):
"What's left is the movie's only real raison d'etre: attractive women
removing their clothes. But watching them get it on with their paunchy,
balding johns is dull as drying latex -- paint, that is."

RIDING HIGH (1950) (reviewed by Amanda DeWees, overall score 79/100):
"Riding High is formulaic enough to hold few surprises for its audience:
We can be pretty certain that Dan and his pals will have to surmount
many obstacles on the way to the Big Race, that somehow these underdogs
will overcome, and that at some point along the way Dan will wake up to
the fact that plucky Alice is the woman he really wants to marry, not
bossy Margaret."

ROSELAND (reviewed by Barrie Maxwell, overall score 75/100):
"Of the three stories, 'The Hustle' is the longest and most fully-
developed. It provides an excellent opportunity for Christopher Walken,
who had just started to really generate attention with his role as the
brother in Annie Hall. He offers the wide-eyed, almost puppy-like look
that characterizes much of his early work, and it works very effectively
here as he tries to please all three of the women, each interested in
him for different reasons, without alienating any of them."

301, 302 (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 77/100):
"I suppose creating a connection between food and sex makes quite a bit
of sense. Both are, at their core, necessary for human survival.
However, both have become a source of industry, pleasure and obsession
for people, so much so that we often don't even associate these
activities with our survival. 301, 302 blurs the lines between the
appetite and sexuality, which pushes this metaphor to uncomfortable
extremes."
