Hi everybody
I recently took one of my DVD's out from my collection to watch it. Unfortunately, I noticed that it wasn't playing, the disk kept skipping for no apparent reason. All became clear however when I removed the disk from the tray and examined the underside. The disk has been totally destroyed, I don't know how this could of happened. Since I treat my disks with kitten-gloves, it must of happened in a drive, but I've never heard of this kind of thing occurring. I went through all the other disks I could find, but only one other disk was affected, from the same collection as well. A picture of the CD is available at http://www.colinjones.co.uk/images/dvd-damage.jpg. I've listed some more additional facts below which may be useful for determining the problem. * The DVDs in question are always stored in their original cases, and are not just left lying on the floor, or in a tray full of coins * They worked perfectly when I first had them and the last time they were used. This is something I just noticed when I went to watch one of them. * No other disks in my collection appear to be affected. The two affected are from the same collection. * I've heard it may be DVD-Rot, but I have yet to see a picture on-line of the effect which looks similar to the effect I experienced. Interestingly though, the effect on the top side of the DVD looks similar to some of the data-sides shown on the Internet. * It's possible a DVD defect may of scratched it like this I suppose, but wouldn't it cause a very loud and noticeable noise that would obviously indicate something was wrong? I haven't experienced anything like that. It's possible somebody could of borrowed it in my house when it happened, but again, they would of informed me if anything strange had happened. I'm at a lost to explain what might of happened here. Does anybody have any idea what may of caused it? Thanks Pan Pan |

Looks like the dvd was ejected/inserted improperly and the the spindle that supposed to grab the dvd in the middle skipped along the middle of the DVD. TCS |

They're clearly spindle marks. I saw a CD once with similar marks (sans the "bites" on the edges) incurred in a CD changer. RichC Rich Clark |

Usually when there are such marks, there are also marks from the disk getting caught in the door as it closes. The OP's disk probably got those marks from the spindle not unchucking fully before the disk was ejected. Sometimes I've seen a disk still spinning on the tray as it got ejected. TCS |

This looks like spindle damage to me as well. Look at teh damage around the
center hub as well. Was that recordable media or commercial media? It looks like it was improperly loaded into a changer, not the media's fault at all.. Or at least another fine product from Warner Home Video > * No other disks in my collection appear to be affected. The two affected > are from the same collection. Warner used some weird materials to produce parts of this DVD set. > I'm at a lost to explain what might of happened here. Does anybody have > any idea what may of caused it? A weird solvent has been used in either the bond between the layers of the DVDs or the printing inks used for the packaging. Over a long period of time this solvent accumulates on the disc surface in strange patterns. So don't worry about your DVD drives, they're perfectly fine. Sounds crazy ? Take a mild (!) soap-based detergent and even more water and cleanse the discs with a soft moist cloth. Cheers, Tim Tim |
