I just rented The Two Towers 4-disc set and when using the first disc,
when I press Stop, it acts as if I had pressed Pause - that is, it freezes the image on the screen. This happens no matter what part of the disk I'm watching. Also, when I press Power Off, the LED display says "Off" for ten seconds before it finally goes off. That never happened before. I also had to power off and on in order to eject. Sometimes it ignored when I pressed Menu. I tried three other discs (one of which was the second disc in the same set) and they all started/stopped normally. Why would one disc cause the player to act like this? I once before rented the same DVD set, although it might not have been the same copy. I use a bottom-of-the-line Sony DVD player which is about two years old. If the optics are getting old, I wonder why it would be for the one disc. Richard Fangnail |

Update:
After I posted this, I simply cleaned the disk and the problems went away! I'm curious as to why dirtiness could interfere with the actual functioning of the player, as opposed to just making it play erratically. Richard Fangnail |

Software bugs in the DVD player, no doubt. Lawrence D¹Oliveiro |

The DVD player would have an error correction function, while the DVD player is trying to correct for an error on the DVD due to dirt or finger prints on the disc it's likely to ignore or get confused with any commands it receives from the remote control. It's a good idea to check for finger prints etc and clean the disc if not clean for any hired DVD. Remember to wipe from the center to the edge of the DVD and not in a circular motion.
