Anyone can write a faq and post it in "your" newsgroup without your
permission. What part of that do you not understand?

Wrong.

Doesn't need to be.

Wrong again.

Still pushing that lie, I see.

LOL
Yeah, I'll get right on that, so you'll quit being so childish.

When "Can I advertise in alt.video.dvd?" comes before "What is DVD?" in
your FAQ, it's clear that you have an agenda other than answering DVD
questions.

Are you suggesting that some rearranging of the sequence of questions
would satisfy you, because I really doubt that.

I trust you noticed that the purpose of the newsgroup was addressed
before the question of advertising. FAQs commonly address more than just
the purpose of the newsgroup.

I have acceded to the wishes of the vocal and quite obnoxious minority
here, and quit confronting or reporting spammers, because I did not want
my actions and the response to them to add to the noise level, but I
certainly haven't changed my views on the subject. One could argue
whether my view is representative of a majority or a minority here, but
there can be no doubt that there are others who share my views. And
further, that those who have argued that all forms of advertising,
whether on-topic or not are welcome, do represent a minority view.

Actually, FAQs frequently DON'T address the purpose of the newsgroup.
That's typically covered in the CHARTER. FAQs are designed to answer
Frequently Asked Questions, hence the acronym. Last I checked, "can I
advertise in alt.video.dvd?" was never a Frequently Asked Question.

Note these FAQs, and the complete lack of a "what is the purpose of this
newsgroup?" section:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/rec-video/dvd-faq/
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/movies/faq/current-films/

And there are others who clearly don't share your views, and would like it
if you'd stop trying to hoist your views onto the rest of the community by
trying to smuggle them into a FAQ that you repeatedly post at intervals
that are *far* to frequent.

And there are others who feel that the FAQ that's been available for years,
assembled by a man whose knowledge of DVD is so vast and complete that he's
published two books about the subject, is more than suitable:

This might be true.

This newsgroup doesn't have a CHARTER.

That's "foist" not "hoist".

There is no community, -Jay. Why not take your computer and DVD
player down to the pawn shop and trade them for a used clue?

The origin message has a pretty good description of the purpose of the
group:
"Discussion of Digital Video Disk hardware and software"
ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control...t.video.dvd.gz

Note that the description also comes up in newsreaders when selecting the
newsgroup to read or subscribe to.

It stopped me from trying to post my views disguised as a legitimately
endorsed FAQ.

You're absolutely right, he is trying to foist his views on the newsgroup.

Well, for someone who can't even acknowledge their own existence, it's not
surprising you can't view a newsgroup as a community. In the most basic
definition of community as "a group of people having common interests,"
this newsgroup would qualify.

Here's a question: What is wrong with the FAQ at www.dvddemystified.com
that required a whole new one?

And guess what. Charters are typically NEVER posted to a newsgroup

More do than don't.

I see you and others trying to "hoist" your views on everyone here on a
regular basis as well.

Tell that to the guy who posts a pointer to the "other" faq twice a
week.

So you say, but I disagree, because my faq addresses questions (other
than advertising) that aren't answered in that other faq. And since an
"alt" group cannot have an official faq anyway, the gripes about me
trying to pass off a faq as being the official faq for this group are
totally unjustified. I have every right to post it and not have people
acting so childish about it.

If you don't like my faq, why can't you just ignore it? That's what I
was told many times in response to my complaints about advertising. I
eventually took that advice, so why don't you and the others take your
own advice now.

LOL
Yeah, I can see how you've been restrained from voicing your views.

You mean besides the fact that he says the faq is "for the rec.video.dvd
Usenet newsgroups."

And that there is advertising on that web site that benefits the faq
writer, and that the faq writer maintains the faq because it promotes
his book sales. He is obviously not doing it purely as a public service.
Including advertising that benefits the faq writer is something very
unusual for a newsgroup faq and many would say that it is very
inappropriate.

I'm restraining myself from lying and circumvention.

So you're problem is that although it contains near everything you'd need
to know about DVD, and answers most of the FAQs posted, it's no good
because it's not for this *specific* group?

Where on that page is there an advertisement for his books? And, most
importantly, what is wrong with the information in the FAQ?
