Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of ANIMAL FARM, ENTER...ZOMBIE KING,
FAST COMPANY: LIMITED EDITION, GEORGE STEVENS: A FILMMAKER'S JOURNEY,
GOZU, IF YOU WERE YOUNG: RAGE, IKE AND TINA TURNER: LIVE IN '71, IT'S
ALL TRUE, KATHY GRIFFIN: ALLEGEDLY, LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL,
STARTUP.COM, and TEN:

ANIMAL FARM (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 87/100):
"The creation of an animated version of Animal Farm is a daunting
proposition. North American audiences aren't used to seeing stories this
dark and vicious told through animation, and shifting the tone to make
it a children's story would completely betray the source material.
Besides, how do you explain to a five-year-old that this is a political
allegory?"

ENTER...ZOMBIE KING (reviewed by David Johnson, overall score 85/100):
"The charm of this flick comes from the alternate universe the
characters seem to inhabit. Here, masked wrestlers walk freely among
unmasked folks, and no one seems to mind. It's just accepted as normal,
and never explained. Similarly, the existence of zombies is not
considered odd; in fact, there are different kinds of zombies, 'wild'
and 'domesticated,' and apparently some research has been done on the
creatures (see 'zombie peer group')."

FAST COMPANY: LIMITED EDITION (reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall
score 90/100):
"Even scholars of Cronenberg's work (like yours truly) find Fast Company
a puzzle. Never mind that it has been nearly impossible to find since
its original 1979 release, but even those who have managed to see it are
not quite sure it, well, counts as a 'Cronenberg movie.' No horror. No
mutations. No weird science. It is about drag racing."

GEORGE STEVENS: A FILMMAKER'S JOURNEY (reviewed by Amanda DeWees,
overall score 94/100):
"George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey is a skilled and often
fascinating film, and it brings much-deserved attention and appreciation
to a man who created many films that are both admired and loved, and
which still have much insight to offer us on American life and
character."

GOZU (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 82/100):
"Although this is one of the best Miike DVDs that have been made
available in North America, it's a somewhat underwhelming film. Fans of
both Audition and Mulholland Drive will probably be thrilled with it,
but fans expecting another Ichi the Killer or City of Lost Souls will
find it long and dull."

IF YOU WERE YOUNG: RAGE (reviewed by Adam Arseneau, overall score
78/100):
"If You Were Young: Rage is something of a mysterious film, if for no
other reason than being the one Kinji Fukasaku film that even die-hard
Japanese fans never got to see."

IKE AND TINA TURNER: LIVE IN '71 (reviewed by Paul Corupe, overall
score 86/100):
"Much has been made of Ike's controlling nature, but aside from how that
may have negatively impacted his personal life, there's no denying that
his impeccable management of The Ike and Tina Turner Revue produced one
of the most highly entertaining rhythm and blues showcases of the 1970s,
and this DVD is a tribute to the talent of all involved."

IT'S ALL TRUE (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 85/100):
"Taking a closer look at the film elements itself, Paramount should be
commended for their restoration work on the clips that appear on this
film -- both the color and black and white footage have been restored to
pristine condition, and are vastly superior to many prints of other,
more important films by Welles I have seen."

KATHY GRIFFIN: ALLEGEDLY (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score
85/100):
"If there's one group of people I am sick of listening to whine and pout
about their 'problems' it's the over-pampered overrated Hollywood and
Music-biz types. My God! I know way too much about these uneducated
hacks who just look pretty in front of a camera, and I'm ready for
someone to take these bitches down. Thank you Kathy! You go girl."

LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL (reviewed by Paul Corupe, overall score
85/100):
"Last Train from Gun Hill is a rare breed of film, a genre exercise that
touches on serious subjects such as loyalty, friendship, and racism
while delivering all the gunplay, brutality, and action set-pieces that
western fans have grown to love."

FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/la...romgunhill.php

STARTUP.COM (reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall score 91/100):
"Leaving the audience to impart value on the rise and fall of
govWorks.com is a crucial move by Noujaim and Hegedus. While the
temptation may be there to force the camera into an editorial mode, they
allow the characters to carry the story."

TEN (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 85/100):
"After discovering the advantages of video while doing documentary work
in Africa, Kiarostami realized video allowed him to report (in his
words) an 'absolute truth,' and set out to make a film working these
principles into the framework of a narrative film."
