I'm getting 16x on a NEC 3500 (2.18 firmware) using TY 8x media.

Under $150? Is that for an external drive?

Both the NEC and the Pioneer are under $75, internal drive.

How can the 108 be the previous gen, if the 109 isn't out yet???

Er no its not CMC dye is cheap but works perfectly in a pioneer and NEC
drive, infact the same dye is used on some higher end branded blank dvds.
The memorex drive even burns to some ritek dyes worse then other drives

Liteon cd burners are considered some of the best when it comes to copying
cds with protection here in the UK one can be had for under £20

There are tons of different brands and models available, and I have only3
and they all do what I need them to do, so I am not a qualified person to
pick the best. If you live in Australia (??) then I dunno, but

If you want to see more users reports then point your browser to
www.videohelp.com and select the DVD Reader/Writer and you can see tons of
reports there.

US? I just got my Nec-3500?? (newest model) at www.newegg.com few months
ago for around 60-65 US$ and either free S/H or around $5 S/H (don't
remember)

I don't do commercial DVD (we have $1 rental on new release, or $20/year
fee for unlimited rental here... they give the deal to get more people to
visit their store to buy other stuff), but I understand if you want to copy
the Copy Protected DVD then you will need to use util, technique, and it's
possible.

What do you guys think about the Plextor DL burner (sorry, I don't know
the model no. off hand)? It has an 8MB cache, compared to the 2MB
cache of the Pioneer 108. I have had a Plextor 40X CD burner for a
while now and I have never had any problems with it.

Actually, the LG4120 will burn DVD+R at 12X, and the LG4160 burns
DVD+R at 16X

Doesn't work that way. The 108 is the current generation Pioneer. If other
companies bring out newer models still the same generation against Pioneer,
just that new generation of NEC 3519, LG 4162 & Plextor 715.
