Default Linaeum Tweeters

Does anyone know if there are speakers sold that have Linaeum tweeters? I
heard tthe dipole at RadioShack a while back (hey, that rimes) and its one of
the best speakers ever made. I think toshiba also made some with the
effervescent Linaeum tweeter.

Anyone know where I can find these speakers?

It appears that Radio Shack has abandoned its RCA Linaeum-tweeter
speakers. All that remains on their website is _RadioShack's Guide to
Home Theater Systems_ which has links to discontinued RCA
Linaeum-tweeter speakers:

Here is my review of the Radio Shack speakers that you heard, from a
post that I made October 22, 2001:

In my opinion, the RCA Pro-LX55 is one of the worst-sounding speakers
ever made. The low-end sound that this speaker produces is
annoyingly-boomy and its almost-dead high-end makes it nearly impossible
to hear tambourines, cymbals or any other high-pitched instruments. I
feel sorry for anyone who paid the list price of $150 each for these
horrible speakers. Even at the current closeout price of $75 each they
are a waste of money. The Advent Calypso (which sells for $50 per pair
at Costco) sounds better than the atrocious RCA Pro-LX55.

The Radio Shack catalog recommends that pairs of the God-awful RCA
Pro-LX55 be mated with the RCA Pro-C55 center-channel speaker: "An ideal
home-theater speaker system might consist of four PRO-LX55's -- two for
front channels, two for surround -- plus the new timbre-matched
center-channel speaker (RCA Pro-C55) below." This "ideal" system would
cost $750 if the speakers were bought at the prices published in the
Radio Shack catalog and there would still be no sub-woofer.

The speakers involved are definitely not matched:

Speaker Freq. Response Power Capacity

Pro-LX55 80-25,000Hz. 65 watts RMS

Pro-C55 55-25,000Hz 100 watts RMS

As difficult as it is to believe, when purchased at half-price ($75),
the RCA Pro-C55 center-channel speaker sounds better than most of its
competition in the $125 range. As a matter of fact, I was so impressed
by the sound and value of this speaker that I bought one the last time
it was on sale. After hearing the Pro-C55, is difficult to fathom that
the "timbre-matched" RCA Pro-LX55 speaker was made by the same
manufacturer.

Those wanting to really do it up brown could have a closed-out,
bargain-basement 100% RCA system for only $880 -- a real slap in the
face for anyone who paid the full price of $1350:

1 RCA 100 watts x 5 receiver: $280 (Reg. $350)
4 RCA "Linaeum" dipole tweeter speakers $300 (Reg. $600)
1 RCA Center channel speaker $100 (Reg. $150)
1 RCA 200-watt 12" powered subwoofer $200 (Reg. $250)

<<The PRO-LX550 will feature a new fiberglass re-enforced HoneyComb
Woofer pairing up with the superb Linaeun Tweeter. The aluminum
enclosure remains about the same except the 2 pieces grill covering the
speakers are now integrated into a single piece. The bottom end response
is raised to 85Hz clearly indicates the requirement of a sub-woofer. The
new 5" woofer itself bears the striking color of yellow following the
B&W's footsteps. The tweeter housing is also modified. A protective
brace now covers the top and both sides of the fragile tweeter. Oddly,
the center speaker's tweeter is attached vertically between the 2
flanking woofers, unlike the horizontal arrangement of the previous
model. Being somewhat of a line source, the center speaker's HF will
probably bounce all over the floor and ceiling but not to the side where
it counts. Hmmm...Anyway, I truly hope that the already good performance
of this series will get a positive boost by the use of the HoneyComb
speaker in place of the Poly cone woofer. I can't hardly wait for them
to arrive at the local Shack.>>

Hearing is believing. My guess is that the PRO-LX550 will still have a
boomy low end and a dead high end. I will be interested to see what
improvement, if any, has been made to the Pro-C55 (Now the PRO-C550). I
will reserve judgment until I have a chance to audition these "improved"
RCA speakers.

Apparently, all of these RCA speakers were discontinued due to weak
sales. However, there are two used pairs listed on eBay:

"These speakers DO NOT have any scratches, have not been damaged, have
never been run hard. Have had less than half the RMS power run on them.
Excellent condition." -- Buy It Now $100.

LEVS PAWNSHOP: "The item your bidding on today is a gently used pair of
RCA Linaeum Speakers. We do not have the top covers." -- Current bid:
US $1.00 (Reserve not met) Buy It Now $150.

The first listing seems to be the best deal and the seller has better
feedback.
