Default UK DVDs - Do they play on US machines?

Hi Guys,

Can anybody tell me, if i take my collection of UK DVDs with me when i move
to the US next year will they play on a region free player or is there still
an issue with PAL/NTSC playback?

Also i was thinking of transfering all my PAL VHS tapes to the computer so i
could burn them to DVD so i can still view them, is this the best plan?
Any better suggestions or help appreciated

Regards,

Neil

You will still need a player that does PAL to NTSC, they are plentiful if
you look around.

Also be aware of the difference between a player that converts PAL to
NTSC and one that merely plays both. With the latter, your TV set must be
PAL-comptible.

PAL/NTSC dual system TVs can be expensive in North America. One approach
would be to bring your UK TV with you with your household effects as it
probably can accomodate both PAL and NTSC.

The UK TV would be designed to run on 240 V, where as the US is 110/120, so
this option might not be such a good idea...

When I returned to Canada from the UK, I brought two UK-acquired TVs with
me. One was designed to operate from 110-240V mains. For the other, I
bought a 110 to 240V step up transformer which worked very well - and a
lot, lot, lot cheaper than buying a comparable (Sony WEGA) TV set new.

Thats what they make appliance transformers for David Z. But I agree with
you, he should just pick up a player that does the PAL to NTSC conversion
and can be made region-free.

Hello Neil, When you come to the US, go to a Walmart store & buy a Philips
DVD player model 642/17. They are currently les than 70.00 US dollars.
They are easily "fixed" by opening the DVD tray and then pressing a few
buttons on the remote. The player will then be region free and this player
does both NTSC & PAL...! Terriffic conversion on the PAL DVDs.

Look up the player on DVDhelp.com for the correct button info...!

Dumb question:

Although this DVD player is advertised as NTSC/PAL playback does that mean
that it can playback (ignoring region issues) a PAL DVD to a NTSC TV, or
only to a PAL TV?

Cheers

My Cyberhome DV-300 (at Walmart for $39.99) is an NTSC/PAL DVD player
that I hacked using videohelp.com, and it plays PAL DVDs on my NTSC TV.
