Default Question - Abyss special edition

I saw 'The Abyss' years ago, and I enjoyed it except for the ending, which I
didn't like. I just picked up the special edition DVD. What is the difference
between the original film and the special edition?

What a funny question - watch it and see!

My sister called the special edition the version that makes sense.

The main thing is that special edition goes more into rising tensions of
the superpower stand off between the US and USSR that started over the
sinking of the USS Montana. That ends up explaining the motivations of
the Navy Seals when recovered and armed the nuclear weapon.

That and the giant tidal waves that the aliens used at the end to send a
message to the humans to keep them from starting a nuclear war.

There's a whole list of those and other small changes listed on the
Internet Movie Database.

It may make some more literal sense, but I find this version to be inferior.
It's hamfisted, overwrought and entirely too obvious - the ambiguity of the
original version is preferable to me. To each his own, of course, but I
like to have a little left to the imagination, which the original did quite
nicely.

About 30 minutes.

A great place to look at the difference between editions is the Internet Movie
DataBase at IMDB.COM... that's where I got my "What's The Difference" question
about the X-rated (due to violence) "RoboCop" and the original cinema release
when Criterion put out the uneditted director's cut awhile back.

Essentially, if I'm not mistaken, there is a different tone to the end of the
new edition with about 25 min. of editted stuff put back in thoughout the
course of the film. I've got several versions on VHS tape but it's been a long
time since I've watched them to note the difference.

For what it's worth, I saw it in the theaters and like you I didn't care for
the ending... the versions I have seen since go a long way towards remedying
that fault - they're still not perfect or anything - but it's a lot better.

Which looked really hokey, so it's no wonder that was cut.

I didn't really understand The Abyss until I saw the extended version.
One of those rare times where I found the director's cut to be an
improvement.

I think that's because of the way the theatrical version was created:
the studio told the director to cut it, he said no, they forced him, so
he just cut out the ending out of spite. If he had gone in and trimmed
scenes throughout the entire film and then gone back and restored them
for the Directors Cut we probably wouldn't think the new version was as
good.
