Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of THE BARYSHNIKOV COLLECTION: THE
NUTCRACKER, DIAL M FOR MURDER, FRIDAY THE 13TH: FROM CRYSTAL LAKE TO MANHATTAN, GAMERA LIMITED EDITION BOX SET, THE HUNTING OF THE PRESIDENT, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, and THE UNTOUCHABLES: SPECIAL EDITION: THE BARYSHNIKOV COLLECTION: THE NUTCRACKER (reviewed by Sandra Dozier, overall score 80/100): "I'm not typically a fan of ballet, but I can watch Baryshnikov in practically anything. His control and ability to catapult himself as though he were lighter than the air he's moving through are a feast for the eyes. I was constantly shaking my head in wonder at his athleticism." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/ba...nutcracker.php DIAL M FOR MURDER (reviewed by Dan Mancini, overall score 90/100): "Alfred Hitchcock's talents as a filmmaker were countless, but his ability to dictate -- almost at a moment's notice -- the character with whom his audience identifies, and his penchant for using that talent to express moral ambiguity by playing our emotional reactions to storytelling conventions against our ethical sensibilities, is perhaps the most singular and potent of them." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/dialmformurder.php FRIDAY THE 13TH: FROM CRYSTAL LAKE TO MANHATTAN (reviewed by Patrick Naugle, overall score 95/100): "Friday the 13th usually stayed pretty consistent throughout. The filmmakers knew exactly what the fans wanted -- nubile teenagers, icky death scenes, and multiple angles of Jason walking through the woods as if he were on a cross-country trek of terror. During the course of eight movies, the plot hardly ever deviated form the norm: teens head to a summer camp to party, teens smoke and have sex, teens go home missing vital organs and appendages. It may not have been cinematic rocket science, but the filmmakers always gave fans what they wanted." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/friday13thboxset.php GAMERA LIMITED EDITION BOX SET (reviewed by David Ryan, overall score 86/100): "Even though he was a friend to children, Gamera never quite got his message of child-friendly Japan-defending through to the Japanese military establishment. They just kept on shooting at him, and treating him like a pariah, even though he was repeatedly saving Nippon's collective bacon from a series of monsters who were decidedly not friends to children." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/gameraboxset.php THE HUNTING OF THE PRESIDENT (reviewed by Eric Profancik, overall score 75/100): "Hunting teaches you that with enough power and influence, any law can be bent and any person can be attacked." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/huntingpresident.php THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS (reviewed by Dan Mancini, overall score 88/100): "Sugarland Express comes off at first pass as a low-key and inauspicious debut feature, and one not particularly Spielbergian. But take a closer look and you'll find the themes of parental separation and emotionally stunted adulthood so often revisited during the director's prolific career. It's just that, in this inaugural theatrical outing, those themes are presented sans the high-octane action and extra-terrestrials that would come to define Spielberg's career." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/sugarlandexpress.php THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE (reviewed by Michael Stailey, overall score 96/100): "From the opening Max Fleischer-inspired flashback -- complete with hilarious homages to Fred Astaire and Josephine Baker -- to the film's final heartfelt frame, Belleville's world is a lush, intricately woven tapestry in which not one millimeter of real estate is left undeveloped. Drama, mystery, comedy, satire, and social/political commentary populate its landscape." FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/tr...belleville.php THE UNTOUCHABLES: SPECIAL EDITION (reviewed by Mitchell Hattaway, overall score 95/100): "After a little more than 17 years, The Untouchables is still just as powerful and entertaining as ever. If you're looking for facts and historical accuracy, you can always watch an Oliver Stone film. Heh-heh."
