I purchased today at newly opened Costco Yokohama (Japan) store DVD Player
"d:1070" by d:sign. Although the player is officially stated as "Region 2 (for Japan), the sales guy at Costco had directed me to this model when I asked him for "region free" capability. Although he did not want to say out too loud, he said this model works "region free". Can someone be kind enough to inform me how I can cofigure to see "region free"? Specifically I want to watch US dvd movies. Thank you in advance. Sachi Noma |

On the OPTIONS screen press 1 then 3 then 7 then 9 and perhaps that will present you with a region selection menu. General rule of thumb when making non-standard electronic goods purchases is to do your research in advance - and especially in Japan, expect to pay a little more for region-free and multi-system items. After all, it's only fair that retailers should make more profit on items that aren't going to sell too well. -- jonathan mr.sumo.snr |

Good advice. > After all, it's only fair that retailers should make more profit on > items that aren't going to sell too well. Why on Earth should a 'region-free' DVD player sell _less_ well? It's not as if it wouldn't play Japanese DVDs and judging from a) the very high prices of DVDs in Japan and b) the popularity of foreign films I would have expected a significant domestic demand. Isn't it more likely that retailers can charge more because they know there will be _more_ demand for it? Paul Blay |

You are making too much sense Paul. Better take an aspirin and lie down. > Isn't it more likely that retailers can charge more because they know > there will be _more_ demand for it? I asked about buying a region free DVD a few weeks ago. Usual answers - they didn't stock any, took the occasional order of course, there were fewer models available, less colors offered and so forth. If only the demand was there... etc. -- "A large number of aliens have been applying themselves to studying in various areas inclusive of studying Japanese" - Masuda Nobuya, Director General, Immigration Bureau. Of the millions of English language DVDs legally bought and rented in Japan every year I expect less than 0.1% of those movies are viewed without either the Japanese audio-track or subtitles enabled. The only exception I can think of where Taro-san would be more than happy to watch an English-only version are movies where the lead guy gets his John Thomas waxed and buffed within in the first 5 minutes. -- jonathan mr.sumo.snr |
